Space Tank finalist in the 2018 Melbourne Awards

We are thrilled to announce that Space Tank was a chosen finalist in the 2018 Melbourne Awards celebrating the inspirational Melbournians who dedicate their time and energy for the benefit of our city.

During a Gala dinner at Melbourne’s Town Hall, Lord Mayor Sally Capp commentated on how significant the event is, “The Melbourne Awards is our City’s highest accolade to recognise people and organisations that make a fantastic contribution to this city with the biggest award being the Melbournian of the year.”

The Melbourne Awards recognise significant achievements in the areas of sustainability, multiculturalism, community and strengthening Melbourne’s profile, with subcategories recognising corporations and community organisations within their respective fields. These finalists were selected following a rigorous assessment and interview process conducted by an independent panel made up of 40 judges and apparently there were thousands of entrants to sift through.

Space Tank was one of the youngest organisation to be a finalist in this year’s program and after seeing all of the candidates who were in the running for an award we were the only organisation representing a Melbourne startup incubator let alone emerging tech manufacturers. I think it’s fair to say that we were the odd one out. My mentor and greatest supporter, Scott Nelson accompanied me at the celebration and I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Scott for the tremendous positive effect that his mentoring has had on my personal and business growth.

Space Tank fills the manufacturing gap in Melbourne’s startup scene; bridging the innovation blind spot and providing a commercial pathway for engineers, innovative designers and product developers to enter high impact markets. Space Tank positions Australia as a leader in the global maker movement.

Considering that organisations like the MCG, Second Bite and the MPavilion were in the mix, I am very proud that Space Tank was considered to be of the same calibre.

I want to extend my sincere congratulations to the Melbourne Ambassadors Program, who like us were also in the Melbourne Profile Award category for corporations. I would like to say how humbled and honoured I am to have even been selected as a finalist alongside such esteemed organisations. To the Melbourne Ambassadors Program team – Great job, you guys pipped us at the post but I will be reaching out to you to see how we can work together.

It is in this spirit of collaboration and good will that I also congratulate all of the finalists of this year’s Melbourne Awards and pay special respect to the winners of the seven categories all of whom can be found here.

A final mention must go to Melbournians of the Year – husband and wife team Simone and Ian Carson, founders of Second Bite. What a magnificent contribution you two are making to Australian people in need of healthy food. 75,000 meals a day! My hat off to you both, truly well deserved!
